OUR HISTORY
In late summer of 1964, a group of friends and relative gathered together to learn how to square dance. A member of the Phillips United Methodist Church arranged to use the church hall for lessons, and Jack Low was hired to teach the classes.
In April 1965, 30 individuals graduated from the class and formed a square dance club. Since the club began in a church, the group chose "Square Halos" as its club name. Jack Low was the club caller for the first 10 years, followed by Dean Salveson for 10 years, and Bill Heiny for five years. Then, Larry Buhler called for six years until the club decided not to have a club caller, using many different callers instead.
Over the years, the club has danced in various halls in the southwest Denver area including the Carmody Recreation Center, the Masonic Temple, and the Lakewood Link Recreation Center. We now dance at Atonement Lutheran Church in Lakewood.
Many members have served as Club officers and on the various Committees. Without these volunteers to serve, the club could not operate.
For many years the Square Halos provided "Community Service" dances by entertaining residents in nursing homes, students in schools, and the community at public events and shopping centers.
The club has been a member of the Denver Area Square and Round Dance Council since its beginning and our members have attended many Colorado State Square Dance Festivals as well as the national conventions.
